Creativity and Rights: How TMACC is Empowering Cork’s Young People

April 2025

Theatre Making and Citizenship Cork, presented by The Everyman, working with YMCA Cork Region is a programme for young people 15-19 who are interested in the arts and learning more about all aspects of theatre, performance, improvisation, devising, creative writing and citizenship.

We are excited to be in our 5th year of this unique partnership and we celebrated our 12th TMACC programme in November with a performance of ‘George’ devised by the participants of the Autumn 2025 programme. Over 200 young people have benefited from participating in the programme over the last 4 years. The Spring Theatre Making and Citizenship Programme 2026 is ongoing and will culminate in a performance on 6th June for Crunniu na nÓg.

The benefits to the young people who take part are clear – new friends, increased confidence and ability to express oneself and be creative. Participants also learn about cultural rights and responsibilities and develop a greater understanding of the arts scene in Cork and young people’s right to access and engage in the arts, whether as an audience member, creator of art or in any of the many roles which ensure that the show must go on!

“TMACC was a space where I felt free to express myself and I got to learn more about theatre. I also learnt more about my rights and my place in society as well as getting to share my own ideas and be listened to” – Participant Feedback

“I loved the TMACC programme. It led to fantastic opportunities and connections and came up in a time in my life when I really needed it. I’m much more confident and prouder of my abilities and skills and have made connections I wouldn’t change for the world. I am incredibly glad I decided to join the TMACC programme.” – Participant Feedback

“TMACC is an amazing, warm and exciting programme for young people to find their voices, feel part of a group and connect with others. Five stars!” – Participant Feedback
